This accolade recognises the charity’s outstanding efforts in partnership working, collaborations and team working – whether that be with local businesses, communities or a group of individuals – coming together to protect and enhance our environment whilst growing social, cultural and economic wealth.

The Thistle Awards, often referred to as the gold standard in Scottish tourism and community impact, celebrate individuals and organisations who make exceptional contributions to Scotland’s tourism industry. Winning the “Celebrating Thriving Communities” award acknowledges FoDC’s tireless work in supporting and building a vibrant and inclusive community through its educational programs, historical preservation, and diverse community initiatives.

Commenting on the win, Anne Campbell, Chair of Friends of Dundonald Castle SCIO, said: “We are absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured to receive this prestigious award. It is testimony to the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters who have helped us build a thriving community around Dundonald Castle and Visitor Centre. We are incredibly thankful to everyone who supports us – we couldn’t do what we do with our amazing team, community and stakeholders.”

FoDC has become a cornerstone of the community, offering historical tours, educational programs for schools, community events, and volunteer opportunities that celebrate both the castle’s rich history and the modern vibrancy of Dundonald. The award shines a spotlight on the organisation’s role in transforming Dundonald Castle into not just a site of historical significance, but a hub of community spirit.

Winning at the regional level means that Friends of Dundonald Castle SCIO will now go on to represent the West of Scotland in the National Scottish Thistle Awards, where the best of Scottish tourism and community initiatives will be celebrated.

The charity extends its heartfelt thanks to all supporters, partners, staff and volunteers who have contributed to its success, and looks forward to continuing its mission of preserving the rich heritage of Dundonald Castle and fostering a sense of pride and unity within its wide-reaching community.
